Week of March 4th

I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing break.

This week our highlight was on Tuesday when we celebrated Read Across America Day along with Dr. Suess' Birthday.  It was also exciting because the class finally had pajama day!  We started the day off reading for 7 minutes silently.  At 9:00 am we headed down to the gym for a K/5 assembly.  We had several special guest readers at the assembly.  One of them was Tom Messner from WPTZ.  He read "There's a Wocket in my Pocket" by Dr. Seuss.  He was awesome and was so excited to be here.  He even shared some pictures before his broadcast that evening on WPTZ and wore his Dr. Seuss hat that a student in our class made.  We also learned that his wife was a teacher and just stopped teaching to become a children's book author.  We will be watching for his books to come out.

There were also 11 High School students from CVU there and they read "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" by Dr. Seuss.   They were all alumni from Shelburne Community School.  They handed out stickers to the students before the assembly and even sung a song with us.  It was a lot of fun having them there.  Ms. Beaumont dressed up like Dr. Seuss and kicked off the assembly.

After the assembly, 3 of the students including my daughter, Jasmine came down to the classroom and read to the students.  Throughout the day we had 4 other Guest readers.  Mr. Miller came in as "Sasha" from Russia and read "Green Eggs and Ham" in both english and russian.  That was really cool to hear.  Ms. Beaumont, Mr. Madden and Ms. Berghahn also read to us.  Overall the day was a lot of fun!!!

On Monday Ben shared his Discovery table.  He taught us all about our ears and how we hear.  We even got to see real bones that are found in ears.  We saw how tiny they really are.  We are looking forward to more Discovery tables in the future.

The rest of the week was our usual schedule.  We have started a new unit in Reading and Writing on Fairy Tales.  In Social Studies we are learning about Cultural Geography and how it has changed over time.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Nancy and Taylor
