Week of February 18th

This week we got to meet with the Polaris 5th grade classes and shared our Science Journals from our unit on Force and Motion.  We told them about the different kinds of bridges we learned about and where the different pushes and pulls could be found.  We shared our bridge designs that we came up and the one the design that our group used to build our bridge.  We also shared our data results from the various experiments we conducted.  The class was so nervous when we headed to Polaris but afterwards were talking about how it wasn't that bad.  The 5th graders also shared their most recent science journals with us.

On Tuesday, we had a dental hygenist from Timberlane Dental come in to speak to us about healthy snacks and how to best take care of our teeth.  She also brought us goody bag

This week in math we have been experimenting with marble rolling and the distances our marbles can travel.  We have recorded data on how far a glass marble goes when it is rolled from various heights.  We also tested different masses of marbles to see how far they rolled (a wood, a steel and the glass marble).  The week after vacation we will be looking at the data from our different trials and will use unifix cubes to find an average of the 3 trials.  Students are really enjoying this unit!

We were so excited to be able to share our Opinion pieces with either our parents or another adult. Everyone worked very hard on writing these, making them better and then publishing their work.   We want to thank those parents who were able to come to our share and listen to students read.  We hope you also enjoyed the opportunity to look at their Science journals.  For those parents who were unable to attend, please check out their Friday folders, you will find their writing in their for them to share with you!

Week of February 11th

Wow!  It was a very busy week.  We started off the week with a Field trip to the Flynn.  We saw "Medicine Bear" and were lucky enough to sit in the front rows in the theater.  We got moved up right before it started.  It was a show full of dance, singing and laughter.  There were several scenes where the children were laughing so hard.  It was fun to watch.

On Tuesday, it was our 100th day of school.  We had a special visit from Zero the Hero and did lots of fun math and literacy activities.  Fun was had by all!!  Check out the slide show of photos.

We also built our bridges in groups of 3 and 4.  We were trying to build a bridge that would support a lot of weight and that a car could go across.  We also needed to make sure that it was side enough for the S.S. Firefly barge to go through.  Students came up with some great designs.  They recorded their data for sturdy and strong it was.  We will be sharing our science journals with the Polaris team next week!

On Wednesday we had Hands on Nature and learned about birds.  We studied their feathers, learned about their beaks and the types of food that they eat and of course watched a great puppet show (everyones favorite:)!  I'd like to thank Cecelia, Lynn and Colleen for coming in and helping our students learn about birds!

On Wednesday we also got to spend some extra time in the gym with our Student teacher, Miss Rapke.  She taught us some hula hooping tricks.  It was wonderful to watch the class try the various tricks.  Boy there are some great hula hoopers in our class.  It wasn't just the girls but there were some talented boys!

On Thursday it was Valentine's Day.  We had a special treats, received lots of fun Valentines and listened to a Valentine story.  I'd like to thank Melissa, Lynn, Colleen, and Cecelia for providing us with the great treats.  Also I'd like to thank Lynn for coming in and helping me to set up.  I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday!

We finally started our new unit in Math on Thursday.  The students are experimenting with various products and trying to get a marble to roll.  Check out the photos from our first day of experimenting.  They got off to a great start!!!

Have a wonderful weekend,
Nancy

Week of February 4th

February is a busy month with many extra activities taking place. Please check the "Upcoming Events" section of the blog to see what is happening over the next two weeks. We will be visiting the Scholastic Book Fair on Monday to browse and create our wish lists. On Thursday we will return to the book fair to purchase books, so please send your child with money on that day if you would like them to purchase books during school hours. Monday morning we will be going on a field trip to the Flynn Theater to see "Medicine Bear". We will return at around 11:15, just in time to go to recess and lunch. Tuesday is our 100th day of school! We are looking forward to a visit from "Zero the Hero" and have some fun 100th day activities planned for the morning & afternoon. Rumor has it that Zero the Hero is a parent of one of the Firefly First Grade students! I refuse to believe this...I can't think of any man in our school who owns a cape and tights! Perhaps I will be proven wrong... Wednesday we will be having our February Hands On Nature lesson. This lesson will focus on birds. As part of Fitness February we will be participating in a variety of activities which encourage a fit and healthy lifestyle.

This week we had the opportunity to see Voyager's play. It was called "Wild and Wacky Weather". The students did an amazing job and our class loved watching them perform. We also got to see the Kindergarten dress rehearsal for their concert. What talented Kindergarteners we have. It was nice to see siblings and cousins from our classroom. Just a reminder to sign up for conferences if you haven't done so already.

Have a great week,
Nancy
