Week of March 18th

We want to thank everyone who was able to come in to meet for a conference.  It was wonderful to talk to each of you about your child and the growth that they have met this year.

Hello everyone!  I, Miss Rapke, have taken over our social studies unit in the last few weeks so Nancy and I decided that I would write about our lessons for this subject.  Doing so also gives me a chance to get used to writing on the blog, which will become my responsibility in the coming weeks as I prepare for and begin my solo teaching in the second and third weeks of April!

This week, we continued our social studies unit thinking about our role in cultural change over time.  On Monday, along with the first grade class, we were introduced to the vocabulary for our read aloud Talking Walls  by Margy Burns Knight.  The book talked about ancestors, cultures, and ceremonies around the world.  Due to the snowday on Tuesday, we continued our work with the vocabulary on Wednesday.  In groups of four, students made a skit, costume, or drawing to help explain their word to the rest of the class.  They came up with some very creative responses!  With a knowledge of that vocabulary, Nancy was able to read the Talking Walls story on Thursday and discussed the significance of walls in different cultures.

During social studies time on Monday this week, we also had a discovery table presentation by Haley on dogs.  She talked about the type of dog she used to have and showed us a picture of her dog now, Sonny.  She also shared what a dog breeding chart looks like and lots of fun facts about dogs.  The students were really interested in how old the world's oldest dog was- 176 dog years!

Have a great weekend,
Taylor and Nancy

Week of March 11th

This week we wrapped up our Unit on Marble rolls. We did this by solving problems using all of the information taught in this unit and creating a mega marble roll for the solution. Some examples of the problems they had to work out making these mega rolls was:
-Make a marble roll that gets the marble to make a jump, go around a corner and land in a cup at the end.
-Make a marble roll that gets the marble to go down, then up, then down again, around a corner, and into a cup.
-Make a marble roll that includes at least:  1 downhill ramp, 1 unphill ramp, and 1 jump.

Most of the groups were successful at designing their marble rolls.  It was fun to listen to their discussions as they worked.

This week we also had Hands on Nature.  I would like to thank Cecelia and Lynn for coming in and teaching about owls.  We learned about the different adaptations that owls have to help them survive such as their ears,  large eyes, silent wings and claws.  Ask your child to tell you about these adaptations.  We learned about the sounds that different types of owls make.  Some examples of owls we listened to were a barn owl, barred owl, long earred owl and a great horned owl.  The class tried to mimic the sounds.  They then had a quiz to see if they could identify them after hearing the sounds randomly.  Lastly we got to dissect owl pellets.  We found out that owls are hungry animals because several of the groups found two skulls in their pellets and one group even found three skulls.  Check out the photos from our day.

In writing we continue our unit on Fairy Tales.  We will begin writing our own next week.  In math we will be working on a new unit of addition and subtraction working with larger numbers and focusing on place value.  We will also do some more problem solving.

In social studies we are continuing with our Cultures unit and talked about wants vs. needs.  Next week we will look at comparing some different cultures.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone next week for conferences.

Have a great weekend,
Nancy

Week of March 4th

I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing break.

This week our highlight was on Tuesday when we celebrated Read Across America Day along with Dr. Suess' Birthday.  It was also exciting because the class finally had pajama day!  We started the day off reading for 7 minutes silently.  At 9:00 am we headed down to the gym for a K/5 assembly.  We had several special guest readers at the assembly.  One of them was Tom Messner from WPTZ.  He read "There's a Wocket in my Pocket" by Dr. Seuss.  He was awesome and was so excited to be here.  He even shared some pictures before his broadcast that evening on WPTZ and wore his Dr. Seuss hat that a student in our class made.  We also learned that his wife was a teacher and just stopped teaching to become a children's book author.  We will be watching for his books to come out.

There were also 11 High School students from CVU there and they read "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" by Dr. Seuss.   They were all alumni from Shelburne Community School.  They handed out stickers to the students before the assembly and even sung a song with us.  It was a lot of fun having them there.  Ms. Beaumont dressed up like Dr. Seuss and kicked off the assembly.

After the assembly, 3 of the students including my daughter, Jasmine came down to the classroom and read to the students.  Throughout the day we had 4 other Guest readers.  Mr. Miller came in as "Sasha" from Russia and read "Green Eggs and Ham" in both english and russian.  That was really cool to hear.  Ms. Beaumont, Mr. Madden and Ms. Berghahn also read to us.  Overall the day was a lot of fun!!!

On Monday Ben shared his Discovery table.  He taught us all about our ears and how we hear.  We even got to see real bones that are found in ears.  We saw how tiny they really are.  We are looking forward to more Discovery tables in the future.

The rest of the week was our usual schedule.  We have started a new unit in Reading and Writing on Fairy Tales.  In Social Studies we are learning about Cultural Geography and how it has changed over time.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Nancy and Taylor
