Week of May 28th

It may have been a short week but your children have worked hard.  We have finally finished up the assessments for the year.  Yeah!!!  For the rest of the year we will work on test taking skills in literacy and math to prepare them for 3rd grade and the necaps which they will take in the fall.

We also finished up our final science unit this week.  The team worked in pairs and made a hand pollinator.  They then tested their hand pollinator to see if it was effective or not.  Most of the students were satisfied with their creation and thought it was a successful pollinator.

We started the week with a beautiful day for Jog-a-thon.  I want to thank all of the parents who came to help!  The children just love this day.  They ran for 40 minutes in the morning and then we had the picnic lunch outside with the DJ.  Boy this class loves to dance!!!  Check out the pictures from the Jog-a-thon:)

On Wednesday the class had a chance to experience Zumba with a certified instructor.  The class loved it.  Hopefully your child shared this with you.

We also had the opportunity to learn about giraffes this week from our Discovery table.  Corey told us about his favorite animal with a presentation board he prepared and some great books full of information on giraffes.  He is an expert! Check out the photos that we have.

Today I sent home a note in the Friday folders with end of the year dates.  A recap of that letter is:

On Wednesday, June 5th we will be having our team picnic at Shelburne Beach.  Families will need to bring their own dinners.  The team will provide dessert and we will celebrate summer birthdays.  It will be from 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm.  Let’s hope for nice weather.  If it does rain, the raindate is June 6th

On Tuesday, June 11th we will have our Field Day.  We’d like to thank the parents who have volunteered to help on that morning.  We could still use a few more volunteers if you are available. We need parents from about 8:45 am until 11:15 am.   Just let us know if you are able to help.

End of Year Spirit Week:
Monday, June 10thWacky Hair Day
Tuesday, June 11thBe a Reader Beach Day (Bring a beach towel and your favorite book to school.)
Wednesday, June 12thBoard Game Day (Bring your favorite board game to school to play.)

Week of May 20th

We worked hard this week on Math and Literacy assessments.  We are almost finished!  I plan to finish them up this coming week and then we look forward to spending the remainder of the school year reviewing and extending our learning in all areas of the curriculum.

During literacy we also presented our Reader's Theaters this week.  Each group presented their story to the rest of the class.  They did a fantastic job!!!  Their was such nice expression from each of the children and even some movement involved in the presentations.  We hope to be able to do one more that we will start next week.

We also look forward to the rescheduled Jog-a-thon on Tuesday of this coming week.  A reminder to send your children to school that day dressed appropriately, already sun screened and with a water bottle.  With any luck this wet weather will move out of the area by then.

Unfortunately our School Outreach visit from Shelburne Farms has had to be cancelled due to the Jog-a-thon rescheduling.  We are working with Shelburne Farms to try to find an alternative date for this, however they are pretty booked at this time of year and it may not be possible.

Next week we will finish up our Science Unit about pollination by using the knowledge we have gained through this unit to act as agricultural engineers and create our own hand pollinators.

Next week we will also be participating in a Zumba class on Wednesday.  Please have your child wear comfortable clothing and sneakers for this event.  It should be a lot of fun!

I hope everyone has a wonderful long weekend,
Nancy

Week of May 13th

This week we started a new unit in math. We are working at problem solving in the real world and how we use math in the real world. We will be solving lots of real world problems as well as working more with money and thinking about when we might use money.

In literacy I have been doing our final assessments in reading. Everyone is doing a terrific job and has really grown throughout these last 2 years. It has been a joy to watch them grow as readers. Next week we will be reading some Reader's Theater to the class.

In science we learned about problems that apple tree farmers have and how they were able to solve those problems without pesticides. We talked about integrated pest management systems and agricultural engineers. Ask your students about them and how these solutions are more beneficial to people and our world.

Today we had our evacuation drill. Everyone did a super job! We followed the procedures of a fire drill to begin with and then walked over to the Field House. Then we walked back to our original spot outside of the school and then were allowed back into the school. We were able to do the whole drill in 45 minutes. A success!!!

Next week is the 20th Jog-a-thon. The class is looking forward to this. Please send your child in with sneakers, appropriate clothing and a water bottle.  Please also put sunscreen on your child before they come to school.   Keep your fingers crossed for good weather!

Have a wonderful weekend, Nancy

Hands On Nature- Honeybees

Week of May 6th

Wow!  I can't believe it's May!!!

On Wednesday we had our last Hands on Nature of the year.  We learned about honeybees.  We learned about the different kinds of honeybees and the roles that each one has.  We learned about the different parts of honeybees and got to see actual bees and identify what kind they were based on their parts and the size of the bee.  We also learned about honey combs and the dance that honeybees do to let other bees know where the honeycomb is.  It was a great unit as it ties in to our Science unit on insects and pollination.  I'd like to thank Lynn, Colleen, Cecelia, and Caitlin for coming in each month and teaching out students about Structure and Function in our world.

In Math we are wrapping up Unit 5 next week and will be moving on to Unit 7.  We are not skipping Unit 6, this was the unit on Marble rolls that we did before Unit 5.  This week we also focused on balancing equations and what the equal sign really means.  An example of a balancing an equation would be 6+8=5+?.  I also send some of these home for homework next week.  In Unit 7 we will be doing some more problem solving and working with money.

In Literacy we are learning some text taking strategies to help students prepare for the necaps next year.  We are working on constructive responses based on reading passages and also multiple choice questions that focus on what's in the text as well as being able to infer answers and think about what the author's message is.  This is a new way of thinking for a lot of the kids and I want to make sure they understand it before next year.  It's really stretching their thinking.

After next week I will no longer be sending home homework.  I know this is a busy time of year for families and as the weather gets nice it's important that children get outside and play.  I would still like your children to continue their reading but they will not have a reading log that they have to return to school.  They are also having to work hard in school with all of the assessments we need to administer so they need a break at night.

Just a reminder that our team will need volunteers for Field Day on June 11th from 9-11am.  This is a fun event that the children look forward to each year.  If you would like to help out, please e-mail me or give me a call.  You can also send in a note with your child.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Nancy

Week of April 29th

I hope that everyone had a wonderful and relaxing vacation. This week we got right back into our normal routine with the exception of our Field trip to the Flynn on Tuesday. We saw "Zuma Zuma" a cirque company from all over Africa. They were incredible!! The performance incorporated circus arts from all over the world with clowning, acrobatics, contortionism, stunts, a layer of theatricality not usually seen in a standard circus performance. Their performances were entertaining and inventive. Their various art forms were blended together to create one seamless, energetic, and dramatic experience for the audience. One of our students was also selected to go up on stage and mimic one of the clowns who was drumming. The team was so excited to see a classmate on stage.

In math we continue to work with 2 digit addition and subtraction. We are doing this through games we learn as a class which incorporate these skills. These games will go into workplaces that we will continue to practice throughout the unit. In Number corner we are working on time, money, and patterning. Next week, I will introduce them to some workouts with multiplication.

In writing we learned a new narrative poem type. Each student wrote a poem about something they dream of doing. We will finish up our poetry unit next week. In Literacy we are working on reading with expression through Reader's Theater. This is also a great technique to improve reading fluency. Students are working in groups and once they are confident with their piece they will read them to the rest of the class.

In Science we are starting a unit on "How insects help to pollinate flowers". This will be a science inquiry unit and students will eventually be making and improving their own hand pollinators.  They will be doing a series of tests to try and figure out what will make a good hand pollinator.

Today was  a sad day for our class.  We had to say goodbye to Miss Rapke.  She finished up her student teaching and did an amazing job.  She was  an great addition to our class and team.  We will miss her very much but we should see her sometime between now and June 1st subbing in the school.  After June 1st she will be returning to NY.  We wish her all the best in her future of becoming a Great Teacher and having a classroom of her own.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Nancy
